Letter to American Legislators

Dear American Legislators,
The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution demands equal protection under the law and due process for all citizens, including vulnerable children facing abuse and other serious crimes. To fulfill this mandate effectively, society must prioritize robust mechanisms to detect and prevent harm. While mandatory reporting laws already require many professionals to disclose known or suspected crimes—especially those endangering children—exemptions like the seal of confession create dangerous gaps. These privileges, though rooted in religious tradition, cannot supersede the compelling state interest in protecting innocent lives from predators.Breaking the seal of confession in cases of child abuse or other grave crimes is not an attack on faith but a necessary step to align religious practice with constitutional obligations to safeguard equal protection. No doctrine should shield perpetrators or allow ongoing victimization. By mandating universal reporting—without absolute exemptions—legislators honor the 14th Amendment's promise: every child deserves protection from harm, regardless of where or how crimes are revealed. Prioritize child safety over institutional secrecy; lives depend on it.
